1/5th Battalion - All kits & light baggage sent to station & piled opposite carriages,
8am Battalion paraded & marched to station Total strength was 25 officers & 665 other ranks including attached,
9.15am but not including Lieut. A.E. Clark Kennedy & 2 assts who left for BOMBAY as advance party by mail, & 12.Q.M. who was left to come by rail the following day.
10.10am The Battalion left LUCKNOW, twenty minutes late owing to lateness of mail,
1135am Arrival CAUNPORE. Left 13.30 ¾ hour before time.
EN ROUTE FOR BOMBAY. Arrived JHANSI 20.55pm owing to very bad engines.
Left JHANSI 21.55pm & Extra delay owing to inadequate supply of hot water ready, for teas.
1/6th Battalion – Church Parade. Football in the afternoon.

8th Battalion – Training continued. Grenade Pit & trenches dug, Rifle Range & Machine Gun range chosen.

Battn, moved to billets in Montmorency Barracks BETHUNE at 10am.
2/4th Battalion GALLIPPOLI.
British troops drying blankets at Suvla Bay after the storm at the end of November 1915

1/5th Battalion – Storing of kit bags and spare baggage and handing over of everything to be left behind to Capt C.I .H. MASTER completed.
7.30am The G.O.C. 8th Lucknow Division Major General MAY Inspected the Battalion in full Field Service Dress & said goodbye,
7pm Orders received for Battalion to leave for BOMBAY at 9,50 a.m on 29th inst.
11pm Orders received to take over 3 horses from officers, 4th to be supplied at BOMBAY also 2 ponies.
1/6th BattalionLIERES.
Remained in billets - Training continued.
7th Battalion – In billets nothing to report.
8th Battalion GANSPETTE.
Battn, marched to NORDAUSQUES into permanent rest billets. (V Corps 2nd Army). Headquarters at large house near Church. The Companies are on the whole some distance from headquarters.

Battn, furnished 2 parties 200 strong to work on defensive line in front of FESTUBERT. Slight fall of snow at midday.
2/4th Battalion GALLIPPOLI.
1/5th Battalion - A final revision of numbers was made & strength reported today as fit was 27 officers and 652 other ranks, The Station board to assess value of chargers was held at 10.0 a.m. three horses passed as fit.
1/6th Battalion – Training continued.
7th Battalion VILLE-SUR-ANCRE.
Enemy aeroplanes passed over villages & dropped 6 bombs near MERICOURT Railway Station.
8th Battalion OCHTEZEELE.

9.30am Battn, marched to BLUEMAISON and GANSPETTE arriving at 2pm.

25th November 1915 –

Battn, furnished 2 working parties to work E of FESTUBERT. Each party 200 strong.
2/4th Battalion GALLIPPOLI.
1/5th Battalion – 13.40hrs Following telegram received from control "please be prepared to move first fifth West Surreys LUCKNOW, to BOMBAY at few hours notice". On receipt of above, all field service clothing was immediately served out, & officers tents equipment etc remaining at Arsenal till receipt of orders to move was wired for.
1/6th Battalion – Training continued.
7th Battalion – Battalion was relieved by 8 East Surrey Regt relief begun at 8.30am & completed at 11am B Company reinforced by A Company took over Tambour mining fatigue & were billeted in BECORDEL. Remainder of Battalion returned to billets at VILLE-SUR-ANCRE.
Casualties during tour of duty in the trenches:-
Other ranks, Killed, None.
Died of wounds, 2.
Wounded 4 Includes 2 slightly, accidentally.
The weather during this tour was fine, enemy rather less active than usual. The health of the Battalion very good. Enemy aeroplanes dropped bombs near BUIRE.
8th Battalion – Battalion left STEENVOORDE at 9.45am and marched to OCHTEZEELE arriving at 2.30pm. Battalion in billets by 3pm.

24th November 1915 – 

1st Battalion – 2Lt J.G.S. Morrison and T. Stranger joined on 24th.
2nd Battalion – Officers 31.    Other Ranks 789.

2 Lts Driver & Ford Kelsey joined Battn. Battalion marched to billets at LE HAMEL at 3.45pm & furnished working party of 5 Off, 200 men to work on defensive line E of FESTUBERT from 5 – 10pm. Weather cold. Rain evening.
2/4th Battalion GALLIPPOLI.
1/6th Battalion – Training continued. The Snipers & Companies used the rifle range and a lecture was given during the afternoon by the Brigadier General. A football ground was obtained & goal post put up.
7th Battalion – Artillery unusually active on both sides. 7 Buffs took over E 1 on Battalions left.
8th Battalion STEENVOORDE.

Battalion remained at STEENVOORDE.

23rd November 1915 – 

1st BattalionHARLEY STREET. (NR CAMBRIN).
2nd Battalion – Officers 29.    Other Ranks 790.
To Hospital 5.
From Hospital Nil.
Billets – cold day – rain evening.
2/4th Battalion GALLIPPOLI.
1/5th Battalion - Battalion took part in another Field Day. Orders were received that the Battalion was not to go into camp as desired by the Brigade but was to do field firing from LUCKNOW marching out each day to KUKRAIL distant about 6 miles, 6 ½ miles it was thought would be a practical & effective preparation for field service.
1/6th Battalion – Bombing, Sniper & Stretcher bearer Classes were commenced & Companies commenced Company Training. A Rifle Range was found and put in working order & a field found where trenches for the Bombers could be dug.
7th Battalion – Enemy fired camouflet at F 3 a 4505, practically no damage done our galleries or works. Explosion was preceded by 4 heavy trench mortar bombs on TAMBOUR F 3 a.
8th Battalion – Brigade marched to STEENVOORDE via POPERINGHE. Ref Bde Order which reads “(1) The 1st N. Staffs, 8th Queens, 12th Sherwood Foresters, 9th Royal Sussex, 7th Northants, & 72 Field Ambulance will move to STEENVOORDE on the night of the 23/24th Nov 1915.
(2) The head of the colums will pass the forked roads RENINGHELST G 34 d 7 2 at 4.45pm. Order of march as in margin (8th Queens was the 2nd Battalion).
3. Hdrqs. 72 I.B will move at the head of this coloum.
The Battalion was billeted by 11.30pm. The men were very comfortable

22nd November 1915 – 

1st Battalion – Battn, relieved the 2nd Battn, (22nd Bde) in billets at HARLEY STREET.
2nd Battalion – Battn, relieved 12 noon by 1st Bn. The Queens. Marched to billets in Tobacco Factory BETHUNE. Weather fine & cold.

2/4th Battalion GALLIPPOLI.
1/5th Battalion -
1/6th Battalion – Marched off at 7.30am (The Brigade marched at 20 minutes intervals) marching via VERQUIN – FOOQUEREIUIL – CHOCQUES – LILLERS to LIERES where the Battn was accommodated in billets which consisted chiefly of barns – Straw was provided & the men made comfortable. 2 men fell out during the march.  
7th Battalion – Very quiet day. Orders received that Battalion would be relieved by 8th East Surrey Regt by daylight on 25.
8th Battalion – Day – quiet. Relieved in U25,26 & 27 by 2 Coys of 1st North Fusiliers & in U28 by 1 Coy R.W.F. Relief complete 10.30pm. Battalion marched back to Camp G RENINGHELST

21st November 1915 – 

1st Battalion – Ordinary Routine.
2nd Battalion – Officers 29.    Other Ranks 794.
To Hospital 2.
From Hospital 4.
Battn, employed working on communication trenches. 2 Coys morning 2 Coys afternoon. Weather fine. Our Artillery shelled Enemy’s wire during afternoon.
2/4th Battalion GALLIPPOLI.
1/5th Battalion - 9 invalids left for discharge.
1/6th Battalion – Remained in billets. Church Parade – All 1st Line Transport Vehicles were loaded. Orders received to march at 7.30am to LIERES. 3 Motor Lorries were placed at our disposal for moving blankets and Quartermasters stores.
7th Battalion – Very quiet day. C Company relieved B in front trenches.
8th Battalion – 9am Enemy shelled support lines of U27. Our artillery very active throughout morning.

Officers of 1st NORTHUMBERLAND FUS. Visited trenches preparatory to taking over our trenches tomorrow.

From Hospital Nil.
Battalion was relieved by 1/S Staff, Regt, and went into reserve billets in HARLEY STREET. All 4 Coys employed working on communication trenches during afternoon. Relief carried out quickly to-day. Weather cold.
2/4th Battalion GALLIPPOLI.
1/5th Battalion - Battalion again went for route march about 10 miles. Marching most satisfactory throughout.
1/6th Battalion – Remained in billets. Companies carried out a Route march. Orders were received to send an advanced billeting party to LIERES on the 21st.
7th Battalion – Enemy active with light & heavy trench mortar bombs. D company relieved A in front trenches.
8th Battalion – The night was very quiet.
6am One of our M.G’s opened fire on cross roads in enemy’s lines; this was part of a Brigade scheme for M.G. fire directed on enemy’s dumps etc.

Day quiet. Work of repair carried on.

2nd Battalion – Enemy’s Whiz-bangs very active throughout the day. Otherwise everything quiet.

2/4th Battalion GALLIPPOLI.
1/5th Battalion - Division asked if mobilisation complete, Reply to effect that practically complete except for Medical establishment, officers chargers, 6 pairs binoculars 6 Sets of telephone, officers tents, necessaries Indented for on payment, field service clothing collected, kits not packed.
1/6th Battalion – Remained in billets – Bombing classes commenced & Companies carried out 2 hours parade.
7th Battalion – Enemy fired 3 trench mortar bombs, heavy into our wire, at F 3 a 62. A patrol under 2/Lt H. Cloudesley examined craters & ground to E of them at F 3 c 49. A German working party was met & successfully bombed. A German wiring party was caught by one of our machine guns & some losses are thought to have been inflicted. Our miners fired camouflet at F 3 a 40 successfully.
8th Battalion – Morning quiet. After Artillery duel – no damage to trenches. At 10.30pm enemy used trench mortars against U29.

The Battalion relieved the S. Staffords in the trenches today. Same section as before. Delay caused through B & C Coys having to draw & put on gumboots.
2/4th Battalion GALLIPPOLI.
1/6th BattalionSAILLY LA BOURSE.
Remained in billets, & refitted – 140 men bathed.
7th Battalion – Enemy shelled trenches F 3 C O 8 with field guns, about 25 shells, no damage. Our miners fired camouflet successfully at F 3 a 40.
8th Battalion – Very quiet, evening marked by brisk machine gun fire on registered points in enemy’s support & reserve lines.

17th November 1915 – 

1st Battalion – Ordinary Routine. At 3pm the gas expert (1st Army) lectured 200 N.C.O’s & men of the Battn, and 200 of Glasgow Hrds. A cylinder was then turned on in an out-house and all the ranks filed through with tube helmets on.
2nd Battalion –Lot of rain & sleet.
Officers 26.    Other Ranks 797.
To Hospital 2.
2/4th Battalion GALLIPPOLI.
1/5th Battalion - On account of the WAHORRUM fast, A Coy was ordered to be in constant readiness to move out at a moments notice today, the 18th & 19th. This order was cancelled at 7.50pm except for the 19th
1/6th Battalion – The relief commenced at 12 noon – The Suffolk Regiment did not let us know which Company was relieving which Company of ours, which led to some confusion among the Guides and also among the Company, as they only had two Coys in the firing line – The relief was completed at 4.15pm and the Battn, proceeded to the same billets at SAILLY LA BOURSE as vacated on the 7th inst.
7th Battalion SUB-SECTOR D3 BECOURT.
A very quiet day, nothing to record.
8th Battalion – At 8am smoke was seen rising from wood in enemy’s support lines in front of U29. Fire by Belgian Battery brought to bear on this spot. Effective rifle fire opened on enemy working parties at dawn. Our snipers report 4 enemy casualties. We suffered 1 N C O Casualty.

16th November 1915 – 

1st Battalion – Ordinary Routine.
2nd Battalion – Battalion relieved in the trenches by the South Staffords again. After relief the Battalion went into billets at LE PREOL.
Officers 26.    Other Ranks 799.
To Hospital 1.
Capt H.D. Cooker joined.
2/4th Battalion GALLIPPOLI.
1/5th Battalion - Battalion took part in another Field Day.
1/6th Battalion – Work was continued, a new communication trench was commenced from CROWN TRENCH to the front line (ALEXANDRIA TRENCH). The enemy shelled our front line during the afternoon & we got our artillery to retaliate. Orders were received for the relief of the Bn, by the 7th Bn, The Suffolk Regt on the 17th.
Casualties – wounded other ranks one.
7th Battalion – The Battalion relieved 8 East Surrey in sub-sector D3. 7th R.W. Kent Regt being in sub-sector E1 on left, 7th Bedfordshire Regt on right in D2. The trenches had suffered considerably from recent rains & snow. A & B Companies took over front line trenches, C Company in support, D in reserve. Steel helmets were received for the first & issued to sentries as far as supplies permitted.
8th Battalion – Enemy shelled our support trenches but retaliation by 2nd Belgian Battery effectively stopped this. Rest of day quiet except for sniping activity on part of enemy.

15th November 1915 – 

1st BattalionVENDIN.
Ordinary Routine, 2 Lieut R. Slatter posted to the Battn, on promotion from the 2nd Battn.
2nd Battalion – Officers 25.    Other Ranks 800.
To Hospital 2.
From Hospital 4.
A Few hostile aeroplanes flew over our lines during the morning with the result that heavy shells were dropped close to our HdQrs. No damage done. Enemy’s trench mortars active.
2/4th Battalion GALLIPPOLI.
1/5th Battalion - Following telegram was received from Adjt, General "Field service clothing first fifth West Surreys should be kept in bulk any Issued to be collected", this was all accordingly withdrawn to stores, this telegram appeared to show that the Battn, was not likely to leave for some time. Accordingly the officer’s tents were left at the Arsenal to save expense, much having already been incurred in respect of servants.
1/6th Battalion – The relief commenced at 8am and was completed by 1pm. Companies were located as follows – A B D Coys in front line from BORDER REDOUBT to pt 57 – C Coy in Reserve in OLD BRITISH FRONT LINE – The trenches were considerably better than those we held on the immediate left. The enemy was fairly quiet & with the exception of sending some trench mortars into BORDER REDOUBT did little shelling – Work was commenced in clearing up trenches – Kings Head was cleared & some wire was put out. The night passed quietly –
Casualties – Wounded O.R. 2.
7th Battalion – In billets nothing to report
8th Battalion – This day was quiet and enabled us to work on drainage of trenches which are in a very bad state. The fire trenches were effectively drained and the work of rebuilding fallen parapet & parados continues.

14th November 1915 – 

1st Battalion – Paraded at 2.30am and marched to VENDIN where the Battn, exchanged billets with 2/S.Staffordshire Regt.
2nd Battalion – At 9am the Battalion relieved the South Staffords at A. I. section (CUINCHY) RIDLEY WALK to GUN STREET. Hd,Qrs WOBURN ABBEY.
Trenches in a very bad state. The parapet has fallen in in many places & the bottom of the trenches full of water & mud. Enemy’s trench mortars active during the afternoon against A Coy. (right front Coy.)
Officers 25.    Other Ranks 798.
To Hospital 1.
From Hospital 2.
2/4th Battalion GALLIPPOLI.
1/5th Battalion -
1/6th Battalion – Remained in reserve – furnished working parties and improved our trenches. A large number of men reported sick suffering from trench feet and 94 were admitted to hospital. These came equally from each Company – Orders were received to relieve the 7th Bn, E. Surrey Regt on the 15th inst.
7th Battalion – In billets nothing to report.
8th Battalion – The Germans shelled DICKEBUSCH but no damage was done to any of our billets. Battalion moved on into trenches to relieve 9th E. Surreys. Relief complete at 9.30pm. The trenches now held by us are U25. U26. U27. U28. – a much larger front. U25. & U26. Are held by one Company 100 strong, U27 by a Company of 95, and U28 by one of 90 strong. One Company is in reserve dug-outs. The 1st NORTH STAFFS are on our right (U24), and the 2nd LONDON REGT (1 Coy) in U29 on our left. Battn, Hdqrs now are at I 33 a 5. 3.

The Queen's (Royal West Surrey) Regiment 13th November 1915

13th November 1915 – 

1st BattalionBEUVRY.
Relieved by 2/R.W Fusiliers (19th Bde,) by 12noon. The Battn, went into billets at BEUVRY for the night.
2nd Battalion – The Battalion (less 250(Working Party) marched at 9am to HARLEY STREET (CUINCHY) & there relieved the 2nd R.W.F. We were relieved at LE PREOL by 1st R.W.F. the entire Battalion was on fatigue throughout the day.
Officers 25.    Other Ranks 797.
Capt H. Allardice joined as 2nd in Command.
2/4th Battalion GALLIPPOLI.
1/5th Battalion -The Battn, went for first route march since May. Distance about 9 miles. During last hour distances were not well kept. Many cases of sore feet reported chiefly, due to keeping boots soft during hot weather in LUCKNOW. Result of annual signalling test published. Satisfactory 9 first class. 5 second. Information received that the Battalion was not take with it the 12 Bearers allowed for war establishment this appears likely to create difficulties as dhoolies form part of mobilisation equipment.
1/6th Battalion – The Bn, was relieved by the 6th Bn. The Buffs. The relief which commenced at 8am was not completed till 2pm – this was mainly due to the bad state of the trenches – On relief the Battn, went back into reserve as follows:- A & B Coys into OLD BRITISH FRONT LINE & 1st & 2nd Support Line. C & D Coy into LANCASHIRE TRENCH. The Battalion had completed its move by 4.30pm – A working party of 50 men were sent out at 5pm.
Casualties wounded other ranks three.
7th Battalion – Orders received that Battalion would relieve 8th East Surrey Regt on 16-17th Nov.

8th Battalion – Supplied 4 working parties under 104th & 129th Coy R.E. The trenches were in a very bad state; communicating trenches could not be used. C.S.M. Percival. B. of A Coy was killed by a shell while returning along trench with one of these parties.

The Queen's (Royal West Surrey) Regiment 12th November 1915

12th November 1915 –
 
1st Battalion – very wet and trenches kept sliding in very badly. Whole Battn, working all day and throughout night. Enemy shelled Battn, H Qrs at 3am night 12/13 and got a direct hit on the roof of H.Q. dugout, without penetrating the roof.
No casualties.
Lt Col H.St.C. Wilkins took command of 5th Bde, from this date during the absence of Br, Gen, Cochran on leave to England.
2nd Battalion – Officers 24.    Other Ranks 797.
To Hospital 1.
At 12 noon the Battalion paraded & marched to billets at LE PREOL, N.E. of BEUVRY. Very wet day.
2/4th Battalion GALLIPPOLI.
1/5th Battalion -
1/6th Battalion – Remained in trenches. The rain still continued at intervals throughout the day – Work was carried on at clearing up the trenches & some wire was put out. Our snipers claimed to of hit 2 Germans. The enemy shelled our front line at intervals during the day.
Casualties wounded other ranks three.
7th Battalion – In billets nothing to report.

8th Battalion – Battalion moved into temporary billets at DICKEBUSCH.

The Queen's (Royal West Surrey) Regiment 11th November 1915

11th November 1915 – 

1st Battalion – Quiet day with shelling, as before, at intervals through the night.
2nd Battalion – Officers 24.    Other Ranks 798.
Capt F.C. Longbourne seconded as B.B.G.O. 2/Lieut K.A. Brown joined.
A & B Coys practised the attack & defence of “defended localities” & C & D fired on the range.
2/4th Battalion GALLIPPOLI.
1/5th Battalion - 6 time expired N.C.O’s & men left for CALCUTTA to escort deportees.
1/6th Battalion – The rain continued and very little work could be done owing to the bad state of the trenches – The enemy were quiet during the day and little shelling took place – The Bombers both ours and the enemy were lively during the night.
Casualties wounded other ranks 3, killed one.
7th Battalion – In billets nothing to report.

8th Battalion – Battalion remained in Camp G, carrying on with training.

The Queen's (Royal West Surrey) Regiment 10th November 1915

10th November 1915 – 

1st BattalionIN THE TRENCHES.
The Battn, relieved the Glasgow Hdrs in Z 1 commencing at 9am from CAMBRIN C H. 12 Divn, on right and 2nd Worcester’s (5th Bde,) on left. Relief completed by 12(noon) At 5.40pm the enemy exploded a mine under the 2nd Worcesters front line. Enemy shelled our BOYAUS and Battn, H.Q. with light H.V. 2/4th Battalion GALLIPPOLI.
1/5th Battalion - The Battn, took part, in a Garrison Field Day under Major Gen, MAY commanding 8th LUCKNOW Division. The Battn, formed part of force attacking entrenched position & delivered main flank attack. It was the first time the Battn, had manoeuvred at all under the double company system & on the whole was satisfactory but, inter communication was bad. Strength on parade was 23 officers 599 other ranks
1/6th BattalionIN THE TRENCHES.
The relief commenced at 8am _ Companies marching at half hour intervals – It poured with rain all day and the trenches which had no floor boards were very muddy – in many cases over the ankles – The men got very wet getting into the trenches. The relief was completed at 1pm B, C, D Coys were in the front line & A Coy in reserve – The front trenches and communication trenches were in a very bad state – in many cases the men were standing in water up to their ankles – thigh gun boots were issued to the men prior to going into the trenches and the men’s feet were all rubbed with whale oil. The enemy shelled our trenches during the afternoon but did little damage – Casualties Killed other ranks 3, Wounded 7. (3 Killed & 3 Wounded were Machine Gunners).
7th Battalion – In billets nothing to report.
8th Battalion – Battalion remained in Camp G, carrying on with training.

We left ESSARS at 9.15am & marched via BETHUNE along the Canal bank to billets in LES HARISOIRS arriving at 1pm.

1/6th Battalion – Repairing of billets was carried on – Working parties found for work in the trenches – Orders for the relief of E. Surrey Regiment in trenches. KAISARIN TRENCH to pt 57.

Battalion remained in Camp G, carrying on with training.

The Queen's (Royal West Surrey) Regiment 8th November 1915

8th November 1915 – 

1st BattalionANNEQUIN.
15 Officers and 500 men on carrying work in trenches all day 2 Lieut C.W. Roffe joined.
Casualties: - 1 Other Rank.
2nd Battalion – Officers 24.    Other Ranks 801.
Wounded 3.
To Hospital 1.
The Battalion was relieved in the morning by 8th Devons (20th Bde,). Owing to bad state of fire and communication trenches the relief extended over 3hrs. Billets in ESSARS.
2/4th Battalion GALLIPPOLI.
1/5th Battalion -
1/6th BattalionVERMELLES.
The day was spent making billets more comfortable by boarding up windows & putting down straw. 200 men were employed as Working Parties in the trenches. Coy Commanders visited the trenches occupied by the 7th E. Surrey Regt with a view to taking them over.
7th Battalion – In billets nothing to report.

8th Battalion – Relieved by 9th E. Surreys relief complete by 10pm & Battalion arrived at RENINGHELST at 3.30am. 2nd Lt Wilcox of A Coy, was killed by a stray bullet while the Company was marching away towards camp.

The Queen's (Royal West Surrey) Regiment 7th November 1915

7th November 1915 – 

1st Battalion – Battn, paraded at 10.15am and marched by Platoons to ANNEQUIN with one Coy at CAMBRIN.
2nd Battalion – Officers 24.    Other Ranks 805.
To Hospital 1.
Sharp frost during past night. No rain. The enemy is very peaceful.
2/4th Battalion GALLIPPOLI.
1/5th Battalion -
1/6th Battalion – Owing to the trenches (Reserve) in which the Suffolks were having been so wet & there being not sufficient accommodation for the Bn, in them, permission to put the Bn, in the cellars in VERMELLES was applied for and granted. The Bn, left SAILLY LA BOURSE at 3pm. Coy marching at half hour intervals. The Battalion was completely accommodated in cellars by 6pm.
7th Battalion VILLE-SUR-ANCRE.
During this period in billets the Battalion was ordered to find working parties on defences, 1 Company at BECOURT WOOD, 2 platoons on intermediate line near BECORDEL-BECOURT. Lt Col Glasgow went on leave, command devolved on Major F.B.B. Pickard.

8th Battalion – Quiet days. – Our snipers gained the upper hand easily.

6th November 1915 – 

1st Battalion – Ordinary Routine

The trenches are in a terrible state. The front line is especially bad.
2/4th Battalion GALLIPPOLI.
1/5th Battalion – 7pm The annual signalling tests were held.
1/6th Battalion – By the kindness of Major EDWARD COLLINS Commanding depot 26th Mule Corps B Company were despatched to be instructed in loading kits tents, ammunition etc. on mules & 100 men are to go daily until such time as the Majority of the Battn, are regarded being tolerably trained. Had the Battn, been moved off in a hurry they would have been very badly handicapped as it had been impossible to obtain any gear for practice since the arrival of the Battn, in India.
7am Annual test of signallers completed.
7th Battalion – Battalion relieved by 8 East Surrey R. & returned to billets at VILLE-SUR-ANCRE.
Casualties during tour of duty in trenches –
Other Ranks, Killed 3.
Missing believed Killed 3.
Wounded 6.
Slightly Wounded 2.
Strength of Battalion, Officers 28, O.R. 993 of these Officers 25, O.R. 933, were with Battalion on this date.

The Queen's (Royal West Surrey) Regiment 5th November 1915

5th November 1915 – 

1st Battalion – 8 Officers and 400 men proceeded to CAMBRIN for fatigue work at 8am in lorries supplied by 2nd Divn.
2nd Battalion – Officers 24.    Other Ranks 809.

The Battalion relieved the 1st South Staffs, in the trenches at GIVENCHY (B 3 sect). HdQrs WINDY CORNER.
2/4th Battalion GALLIPPOLI.
1/5th Battalion – 4pm Following telegram was received from H.Q. Allahabad "Chief of the General Staff wires that the mobilisation of the first fifth Queen's is only a precautionary measure and unit should be informed accordingly". What exactly is meant by this is not known nor how it affects the general mobilisation regulations. It is assumed however that orders to move will be proceeded by some considerable notice as it would appear to signify that as little change from peace routine as possible is to be made accordingly on receipt final handing over to Capt, Master was stopped, musketry which had been being carried on for those who had not fired at all was resumed in ordinary course & ordinary training continued.
7am The annual signalling tests were held.
1/6th Battalion – Remained in billets – Coys carried out two hours parade, route march & drill.
7th Battalion – At 5am enemy fired mine at F3 a 50 destroying one of our listening posts & killing three occupants. Some damage done to our shafts & 6 miners killed. No shell fire followed. Orders received that Bn, would be relieved by 8 East Surrey R on 6/7th.

4th November 1915 –

2/4th Battalion GALLIPPOLI.
1/5th Battalion - Orders were received that details & baggage to be left behind were to be attached to 1/4th Queen's LUCKNOW, but no action to be taken until receipt of orders to move. Arrangements for depot were therefore apparently to be cancelled, to this the C.O. objected & protested. By this evening practically all stores had been received & issued except tents, servants clothing, machine gun tripods, telephones, binoculars. Necessaries had also not arrived.
1/6th Battalion – Coys carried out a practice assault with bombers etc, in trenches dug for purpose on the VERMELLES - SAILLY LA BOURSE Rd.
7th Battalion – Quiet day, nothing to record.
8th Battalion TRENCHES I 32 b 6 3 (HDQRS).

Returned to trenches 24 25 26 again to take over from 9th E.Surrey regt. Relief complete by 9.30pm. Battalion had tea in field ¾ mile W, of DICKEBUSCH.

2/4th Battalion GALLIPPOLI.
1/5th Battalion - As soon as numbers of Companies were known indents for stores were wired & were promptly complied with. A station board was ordered to assemble to assess the value of officer’s chargers to be purchased if required. Orders were received to take one suit of Khaki Home Service serge & one suit khaki drill.
1/6th Battalion – Remained in billets – Coys carried out two hours parade during the morning - & completed refitting.
7th Battalion – Some artillery activity on both sides.

8th Battalion – Bad weather prevented carrying on of training. Brigade Recreation room opened in barn in camp G.

1st Battalion – Relieved by 2/Ox & Bucks L.I. by 12 (noon). The Battn, marched back to ANNEZIN and went into billets.

1/5th Battalion -7.30am Brig, Gen, Johnson commanding the ALLAHABAD LUCKNOW, and FYZABAD Brigade Areas inspected the Battn.
1/6th BattalionSAILLY LA BOURSE.
Remained in billets – it rained all day. Coys refitted with clothes & boots.
7th Battalion – Heavy rain all day greatly damaged trenches especially in TAMBOUR F3 a F3 b. Most of dugouts leaked badly. Much work on repairs necessitated. Enemy very inactive probably suffering in same way.

1st Battalion – Enemy still showing more activity with snipers but no shelling on our section. Casualties 2 Killed 1 Wounded.

The Battn, was relieved in the trenches today by the 2nd Borders (20th Bde,). Billets in ESSARS.
2/4th Battalion GALLIPPOLI.
During the month, the Battalion has been quartered in dug outs on the southern Slopes of LALA BABA (SUVLA BAY)
1/5th Battalion - All officer except, Lieut. L.W. Jardine and all N.C.O's & men except 1 clerk at Bde, H.Q. having now returned the medical examination of the Battn, was, completed & the strength (excluding the officers and men referred to.) reported fit for service was, Officers 24  Other Ranks 657
Medical 1 Other Ranks. 5.

Capt C .E.H. MASTER was nominated to command the depot.
1/6th BattalionIN THE TRENCHES.
A quiet day. The enemy were inactive both with bombs & guns. The battalion was relieved by the 11th Middlesex. The relief commenced at 1pm from BARTS and was completed by 4.15pm. The Battn, on relief proceeded to SAILLY LA BOURSE. The weather was very bad & many of the billets leaked.
Casualties – Wounded O.R. two.
7th Battalion SUB SECTOR D3 BECOURT.
Our miners fired camouflet at F3 a 4505, believed very successful. Our artillery shelled F3 a 63 immediately afterwards. A large supply of various grenades received with orders that they were to be “expended on the enemy as early as possible” in view of probable increase in output of Mills & Rifle grenades. Rate of expenditure of grenades other than Mills grenades therefore much increased.   
8th Battalion RENINGHELST.

Battalion arrived at Camp G, at 3am – men very dirty and tired. Day devoted to rest and bathing.
