29th July 1915 – 

1st Battalion – Owing to withdrawal of GLASGOW Hdrs, from support points at CUINCHY and CAMBRIN, C Coy, and D Coy, remain in these places. Relief of remainder of Battn, by Oxfords completed by 5pm. The Battn, Hd, Qrs were shelled during the relief.
Casualties 1 man Killed & 7 wounded.
The Battn went into billets at ANNEQUIN.
2nd Battalion – Officers 32.    Other Ranks 961.
From Hospital 2.
To Hospital 4.
2/Lieut W. Battiscombe to the 1st Bn.
A working party consisting of 8 Officers & 287 N.C.O’s & men improved the front communication trenches during the night.

Quiet day, found working parties of 650 men at Subsidiary line of trenches – by night.
2/4th Battalion ALEXANDRIA.
7th Battalion BERTANGLES.

Battalion arrived at BERTANGLES & was billeted in the village with Hd Qrs 55 Infantry Brigade, 7th Buffs & 8th East Surrey Regt.

28th July 1915 – 

1st Battalion – Enemy shelled left front Coy, at Brickstacks.
Casualties Nil,
2 Lieut Battiscombe joined the Battn.
2nd Battalion – Officers 32.    Other Ranks 959.
From Hospital 2.
A digging party consisting of 7 Officers & 385 N.C.O’s & men constructing fire positions in the CADBURY & FUNNEL communication trenches during the night.
1/6th Battalion – The enemy fired 15 H.E. 15 pr Shells in the vicinity of LUKERS HOUSES at 11.15am doing no damage. The Bn was relieved in the trenches by the 7th East Surrey Regt. Relief commenced at 8pm and was completed at 10.30pm. The Battn on being relieved returned to billets at LE BIZET.
2/4th Battalion ALEXANDRIA.
Called at Alexandria, route march daily. Disembarked 1st line transport.

7th Battalion BOULOGNE.
Battalion spent night of 27-28 in rest camp at BOULOGNE & entrained at GARE CENTRALE at 9pm for BERTANGLES, near AMIENS. Emergency rations & some stores were drawn at BOULOGNE.

Transport etc spent night 27-28 at HARVE & entrained on morning of 28th for AMIENS, marching from there to BERTANGLES where billets were taken over for the Battalion.

27th July 1915 – 

1st Battalion –Quiet day. 2 Lieut G.B. Colebrook & Pte Hoare buried at A20 b.6.8. on N.W side of house (BETHUNE).
2nd Battalion – Officers 32.    Other Ranks 963.
To Hospital 4.
Lieut, B.H. Hayes sick.
Paraded at 7.20pm 26th July & marched via VIEILLE CHAPELLE to the trenches. The Bn, in Bde, reserve on RUE DES BERCEAUX & RUE DES CHAVETTE.
1/6th Battalion – The enemy fired 6 H.E. Shells at Hdqr FM – at 12 noon all of which fell short, and 4 of which were blind _ The remainder of the day was quiet.
Casualties wounded other ranks one.
2/4th Battalion
7th Battalion – The above party remained at during the 27th. In the afternoon of this date the remainder of the battalion entrained at CODFORD, Bn Hd-Qrs A & B Companies in first trainload, C & D Companies under Major H.C. Jeddere-Fisher in 2nd trainload; & embarked at FOLKSTONE in S S VICTORA & crossed to BOULOGNE.

26th July 1915 – 

1st Battalion – Quiet day.
Casualties 2 Lieut G.B. Colebrook & 1man killed & 3 men wounded.

To Hospital 4.
Br, Genl, Lawford inspected the Bn, on parade & congratulated all ranks on keeping so fit & on their smart & clean turnout.
1/6th Battalion – A quiet morning – At 2.pm our artillery heavily bombarded the CRATER adjoining the Brewery and the enemy trenches about this place. – They appeared to make very good practice – The enemy did not reply.
Casualties Wounded other ranks one.
2/4th Battalion – on H.M.T. “Uysses” to join Med, Expdy, Force.
7th Battalion (7th Service Battalion the Queens) CODFORD.
The Regimental Transport and 105 Rank and File of the Battalion under Second-in-Command, Major F.B.B. Pickard, with Lt C.A. Haggard and Lt N.C. Ingpen entrained at CODFORD & embarked at SOUTHAMPTON in S.S Mount Temple. This party crossed to HARVE on night of 26-27 July.

The Queen's (Royal West Surrey) Regiment 25th July 1915

25th July 1915 – 

1st BattalionIN TRENCHES (CUINCEY)
Paraded at 7.45am and marched to CUINCEY by platoons. Relief of Oxfords completed by 12. (noon). Quiet day.
Casualties 1 man died of wounds. 
2nd Battalion – Officers 32.    Other Ranks 968.
To Hospital 1.
1/6th Battalion – A somewhat lively morning – at 10.45 am the enemy fired about 14 cylinder bombs into Barkenham House and the Communication Trench around Old Snipers House. We replied with trench mortars and rifle grenades. The enemy again opened fire on 93 & 94 trenches with Rifle grenades, Cylinder bombs & 15 pr H.E Shells, to which we replied & the gunners assisted with shrapnel. No damage was done to our trenches & the episode closed about noon we having the last shot. The remainder of the day was quiet.
Wounded other ranks 5, including C.S. Major Anniss was severely wounded. (afterwards died of his wounds 26th)

2/4th Battalion – 8.0am to 4.0pm Landed at Malta.

The Battn, comes under orders of 5th Inf, Bde from 8.am today. 2 Lieut A.C. Armitage and one man accidently killed and 2 Lieut G.B. Goldberg wounded by explosion of Battye hand bomb while practising. The Battn, moved into BETHUNE at 5.15 pm and billeted in the tobacco factory.
2 Lt Armitage and Pte Parsons buried in BEUVRY cemetery.
2nd Battalion – Officers 32.    Other Ranks 945.
Reinforcements 30.
To A.S.C. 3.
Wounded 1.
To Hospital 2.
From Hospital 1.
1/6th Battalion – Remained in billets, Quiet day found working parties of 550 men to work on subsidiary line.

16th July 1915 – 

1st Battalion – Usual work.
2nd Battalion – Officers 34.    Other Ranks 970.
To Hospital 1.
“D” Coy sent to CROIX BARREE works.
1/6th Battalion –Enemy fired trench mortars in to 94 (D Coys) trench – wounding 3 men. Battalion was relieved by 7th East Surrey Regt – the relief commenced from MOTOR CAR CORNER at 9. pm (except two platoons of A Coy which came in earlier) The relief was completed at 12.30 am. It rained hard during the relief which made the trenches very muddy & slippery and somewhat delayed the relief. The Battn, on being relieved proceeded to billets at LE BIZET. The last platoon to be relieved arrived in billets at 3.30 am.

Casualties – Wounded 0.Ranks 8 (one slight).

“B” Coy has 1 platoon sent to occupy & improve the works at HENS POST. (1500 yards south of CROIX BARREE).
1/6th Battalion – Quiet day. Companies worked at repairing wire in front of parapits during the previous night – Our snipers claim to have hit 4 of a hostile working party. Officers of the 7th East Surrey Regt went round the trenches with a view to taking them over

Casualties – Two Other ranks wounded.

To Hospital 2.
“A” Coy went to CROIX BARREE works.
1/6th Battalion – At 3.45 am our trench opened fire on the German barricade on the LE TOUQUET RD from 92 (A Coy) Trench – doing some damage – About 5 am the Germans replied with Hand Grenades, Mortars & Trench Howitzers. Wounding Capt G.H. Higgings, Capt Rolls (slightly) & 7 men (2 slightly). It was reported that one of the hostile grenades fell in our bomb store in 92 trench which caused an explosion, & probably this caused our casualties. The remainder of the day was quiet.

The Bn, left PARADIS at 7.20 pm & marched to VIEILLE CHAPELLE, & billeted on the East side of latter place – at 8.45 pm. The Battn, in Divisional Reserve & under orders to move at short notice.
1/6th Battalion – Quiet day. Companies worked at repairing parapets, & making dugouts splinter proof.

Casualties – One O.R.  wounded.

12th July 1915 – 

1st Battalion – Work under 2nd Divn, resumed. No 10731 Pte Stepney accidently wounded in billets by revolver.
2nd Battalion – Officers 34.    Other Ranks 962.
To Hospital 2.
The Battalion left BOURECQ at 1.0 pm passed through ROBECQ at 3.30 pm, tea on east side of latter place. Arrived & went into billets at PARADIS at 7.30 pm.
1/6th Battalion – Bn Hqrs was shelled at about 11. Am one shell hitting the roof. Capt G.Chubb was killed, being hit in the head by a sniper while looking over the parapet about 4. pm It was found more convenient to issue rations to Companies early in the morning, as during the night the communication trenches were blocked by working parties proceeding from & to the subsidiary fire trenches, which were under construction. Rations were therefore dumped at Headquarters by night, divided into Company Messes by Coy Quartermaster Sergt, & fetched by Companies about 3.30 am in the morning.
Casualties – One officer killed (Capt Chubb) 3 other ranks wounded.

2nd Battalion – Officers 34.    Other Ranks 964.
1 Officer sick, (Lt, E.R.B. Furze).

1/6th BattalionIN THE TRENCHES
A quiet day. Rations were brought up by night (9.30 pm) to Bn Hqrs & issued to Companies – One water cart was brought up to Bn Hqrs & left there. Transport could not come up Headquarters by day _ and a hand cart was found very useful for bringing up baggage and stores up from MOTOR CAR CORNER.

The Queen's (Royal West Surrey) Regiment 10th July 1915

10th July 1915 – 

1st Battalion – The Secretary of State for War paid a visit to the 1st Army HQ on July 8th and a guard of Honor was found by the Detmt 1/Queens at AIRE under Lt W. Nickolas. 2 Lieut C.D.M. Fowler promoted Lieutenant d/12-4-15.
2nd Battalion – Officers 34.    Other Ranks 970.
Increase 1 man from Hospital.
Coy, Parades.
1/6th Battalion – Battalion relieved R.Sussex Regt in trenches. The Battalion left Billets at 4.am. Companies leaving in platoons at 200 paces interval. Guides met platoons at MOTOR CAR CORNER & conducted them to the trenches – The relief was complete by 8.am A-C, less 2 platoons & D Coys were in the fire trenches. B Coy less 2 platoons of B Coy & 2 platoons of C Coy were in support trench. The transport moved on to PONTCEAU.

Casualties – one other ranks wounded.

9th July 1915 – 

1st Battalion – Usual work.
2nd Battalion – Officers 34.    Other Ranks 969.
To M.T. Branch 2.
Lord Kitchener inspected the Bn, who lined the road N of St HILAIRE.
1/6th Battalion – Remained in billets. 1 Sergt from each platoon went into trenches occupied by 7th R.Sussex Rgt to get acquainted with trench occupied by their platoons.

A draft of 60 other ranks arrived from the base - 22 of these were men who had been left behind sick, at various places since the Bn left England – The remainder were from 3rd Battalion.
