29^th November 1915 – 

1st Battalion – Ordinary work. Casualty 1 Wounded. 2 Lt S.E. Lukin joined on 29^th.

2/4^th Battalion – GALLIPPOLI.

1/5^th Battalion - All kits & light baggage sent to station & piled opposite carriages,

8am Battalion paraded & marched to station Total strength was 25 officers & 665 other ranks including attached,

9.15am but not including Lieut. A.E. Clark Kennedy & 2 assts who left for BOMBAY as advance party by mail, & 12.Q.M. who was left to come by rail the following day.

10.10am The Battalion left LUCKNOW, twenty minutes late owing to lateness of mail,

1135am Arrival CAUNPORE. Left 13.30 ¾ hour before time.

EN ROUTE FOR BOMBAY. Arrived JHANSI 20.55pm owing to very bad engines.

Left JHANSI 21.55pm & Extra delay owing to inadequate supply of hot water ready, for teas.

1/6^th Battalion – Church Parade. Football in the afternoon.

7^th Battalion – In billets nothing to report.

8^th Battalion – Training continued. Grenade Pit & trenches dug, Rifle Range & Machine Gun range chosen.

Battn, furnished 2 working parties – 50 and 150 for work on defensive line at GUENCHY. Weather very cold.

2/4^th Battalion – GALLIPPOLI.

1/5^th Battalion - Handing of stores & surplus baggage completed

2pm Tents Ammunition Q.M. Stores sent to the Station and loaded on to train. 1/4 Queens supplied a guard for the night.

1/6^th Battalion – Training continued during the morning football in the afternoon.

7^th Battalion – In billets nothing to report.

8^th Battalion – NORDAUSQUES.

1st Battalion – Ordinary work. One Company of 21^st R.F attached for 24 hours duty.

Battn, moved to billets in Montmorency Barracks BETHUNE at 10am.

2/4^th Battalion – GALLIPPOLI.

British troops drying blankets at Suvla Bay after the storm at the end of November 1915

1/5^th Battalion – Storing of kit bags and spare baggage and handing over of everything to be left behind to Capt C.I .H. MASTER completed.

7.30am The G.O.C. 8th Lucknow Division Major General MAY Inspected the Battalion in full Field Service Dress & said goodbye,

7pm Orders received for Battalion to leave for BOMBAY at 9,50 a.m on 29th inst.

11pm Orders received to take over 3 horses from officers, 4th to be supplied at BOMBAY also 2 ponies.

Battn, marched to NORDAUSQUES into permanent rest billets. (V Corps 2^nd Army). Headquarters at large house near Church. The Companies are on the whole some distance from headquarters.

1st Battalion – SECTION A1.

Relieved 2/Oxfords in Section A1 (From GUN STREET on right to RIDLEY WALK on left) One Company of 21^st R. Fusiliers attached on 26^th for 24 hours duty.

2Lt R.P. Slatter joined on 26^th.

2nd Battalion – Officers 31.    Other Ranks 776.

Battn, furnished 2 parties 200 strong to work on defensive line in front of FESTUBERT. Slight fall of snow at midday.

2/4^th Battalion – GALLIPPOLI.

1/5^th Battalion - A final revision of numbers was made & strength reported today as fit was 27 officers and 652 other ranks, The Station board to assess value of chargers was held at 10.0 a.m. three horses passed as fit.

1/6^th Battalion – Training continued.

7^th Battalion – VILLE-SUR-ANCRE.

Enemy aeroplanes passed over villages & dropped 6 bombs near MERICOURT Railway Station.

8^th Battalion – OCHTEZEELE.

9.30am Battn, marched to BLUEMAISON and GANSPETTE arriving at 2pm.

25^th November 1915 – 

1st Battalion – Ordinary Routine.

2nd Battalion – Officers 31.    Other Ranks 784.

Battn, furnished 2 working parties to work E of FESTUBERT. Each party 200 strong.

2/4^th Battalion – GALLIPPOLI.

1/5^th Battalion – 13.40hrs Following telegram received from control "please be prepared to move first fifth West Surreys LUCKNOW, to BOMBAY at few hours notice". On receipt of above, all field service clothing was immediately served out, & officers tents equipment etc remaining at Arsenal till receipt of orders to move was wired for.

1/6^th Battalion – Training continued.

7^th Battalion – Battalion was relieved by 8 East Surrey Regt relief begun at 8.30am & completed at 11am B Company reinforced by A Company took over Tambour mining fatigue & were billeted in BECORDEL. Remainder of Battalion returned to billets at VILLE-SUR-ANCRE.

Casualties during tour of duty in the trenches:-

Wounded 4 Includes 2 slightly, accidentally.

The weather during this tour was fine, enemy rather less active than usual. The health of the Battalion very good. Enemy aeroplanes dropped bombs near BUIRE.

8^th Battalion – Battalion left STEENVOORDE at 9.45am and marched to OCHTEZEELE arriving at 2.30pm. Battalion in billets by 3pm.

24^th November 1915 – 

1st Battalion – 2Lt J.G.S. Morrison and T. Stranger joined on 24^th.

2nd Battalion – Officers 31.    Other Ranks 789.

2 Lts Driver & Ford Kelsey joined Battn. Battalion marched to billets at LE HAMEL at 3.45pm & furnished working party of 5 Off, 200 men to work on defensive line E of FESTUBERT from 5 – 10pm. Weather cold. Rain evening.

2/4^th Battalion – GALLIPPOLI.

1/6^th Battalion – Training continued. The Snipers & Companies used the rifle range and a lecture was given during the afternoon by the Brigadier General. A football ground was obtained & goal post put up.

7^th Battalion – Artillery unusually active on both sides. 7 Buffs took over E 1 on Battalions left.

8^th Battalion – STEENVOORDE.

Battalion remained at STEENVOORDE.

23^rd November 1915 – 

1st Battalion – HARLEY STREET. (NR CAMBRIN).

2nd Battalion – Officers 29.    Other Ranks 790.

To Hospital 5.

From Hospital Nil.

Billets – cold day – rain evening.

2/4^th Battalion – GALLIPPOLI.

1/5^th Battalion - Battalion took part in another Field Day. Orders were received that the Battalion was not to go into camp as desired by the Brigade but was to do field firing from LUCKNOW marching out each day to KUKRAIL distant about 6 miles, 6 ½ miles it was thought would be a practical & effective preparation for field service.

1/6^th Battalion – Bombing, Sniper & Stretcher bearer Classes were commenced & Companies commenced Company Training. A Rifle Range was found and put in working order & a field found where trenches for the Bombers could be dug.

7^th Battalion – Enemy fired camouflet at F 3 a 4505, practically no damage done our galleries or works. Explosion was preceded by 4 heavy trench mortar bombs on TAMBOUR F 3 a.

8^th Battalion – Brigade marched to STEENVOORDE via POPERINGHE. Ref Bde Order which reads “(1) The 1^st N. Staffs, 8^th Queens, 12^th Sherwood Foresters, 9^th Royal Sussex, 7^th Northants, & 72 Field Ambulance will move to STEENVOORDE on the night of the 23/24^th Nov 1915.

(2) The head of the colums will pass the forked roads RENINGHELST G 34 d 7 2 at 4.45pm. Order of march as in margin (8^th Queens was the 2^nd Battalion).

3. Hdrqs. 72 I.B will move at the head of this coloum.

The Battalion was billeted by 11.30pm. The men were very comfortable
