20th May 1916–
1st Battalion – Ordinary routine.
Lecture to battalion signallers by divisional signals officer in morning,
cautioning against German listening apparatus.
2nd Battalion –
Germans were very active with rifle grenades, killing two men.

Battalion –
1/5th
Battalion – Hours of work altered so that instead of working by reliefs
the whole Battn worked from 6.0 – 9.0 am & 4.0 – 7.0 pm. The Army Commander
left.
Altho’ the river has started to fall the C.R.E. required a
full working day but hours of work were now finally modified to 6.0 – 9.0 am
& 5.0 – 7.0 pm.
1/6th Battalion
– The Battalion remained in billets & continued training.
7th
Battalion – Lt Shuldham-Legh, Lt O.E. Saltmarsh, Lt V. hook proceeded on
leave – Enemy fired several shells into BRAY – between 8am and 9am causing
several casualties to the 1st Bn South Staffordshire Regt. We
sustained no casualties. Very little damage was done to buildings -
8th
Battalion – 20th – 24th This tour passed quietly on our front.
‘GAS ALERT’ was the order for the greater part of the time. On the afternoon of
the 22nd our ‘Heavies’ burst two gas cylinders in the Enemy trench
opposite D 2 & D 3.
